Children's advocates in Florida can attest to the harm of a growing reliance on antidepressants and other mind-altering drugs without adequate information or medical evaluation. Last year, the Florida Statewide Advocacy Council found that too many children in foster care were getting psychotropic drugs - some without any symptoms, and most without any monitoring for side effects. This year, Janssen Pharmaceutica Inc., which makes the commonly prescribed antipsychotic drug Risperdal, acknowledged hiding from physicians and the public that the drug increases the risk of stroke, diabetes and other potentially fatal illnesses.
