A former Russell County, Virginia psychiatrist has agreed to never practice medicine again following a guilty plea for federal healthcare and wire fraud charges related to a sexual relationship with a patient.

Alfredo Cervantes, 62, will be sentenced on Jan. 4 and faces up to 30 years in prison and $500,000 in fines.

Cervantes was a practicing physician at Ballad Health’s Russell County Medical Center outpatient ward known as Clearview when he began the inappropriate affair with the patient in February 2012. Court documents said that included encouraging the patient to consume alcohol while she was prescribed narcotics for treatment. The psychiatrist ended the relationship and the patient attempted suicide, the report said.

Prosecutors argued that Cervantes billed Virginia Medicaid for more than $9,300 in psychiatric care that was never rendered.

His medical license and DEA registration were suspended in 2015.
