AMARILLO, Texas (AP) – A West Texas psychiatrist must serve nearly six years in federal prison and repay more than $1.8 million for health care fraud.

Dr. Robert Hadley Gross of San Angelo was sentenced Wednesday in Amarillo in the scam over medical services never provided.

Gross in September pleaded guilty to health care fraud related to a scheme involving Medicare and Medicaid.

Gross in 2014 was indicted on more than 50 counts of billing fraud mainly involving nursing home residents or patients who died, in cases since 2009. He served clients in San Angelo, Midland, Abilene and Brownwood.

Investigators say in some cases the patients had died or been discharged from medical facilities on dates Gross falsely maintained he provided services.
