Doctor Owes $23 Million for Psychiatric-Related Medicare Fraud

A doctor must pay $23 million after his conviction in Texas for Medicare fraud related to the improper treatment of dementia patients, the Fifth Circuit affirmed Dec. 16.
Doctor Riaz Mazcuri, also known as Riyaz Mazkouri, was the attending physician at two partial-hospitalization programs at the Riverside General Hospital, which provided outpatient psychiatric services to their patients.
Mazcuri admitted large numbers of patients to his programs without proper evaluations and also billed Medicare for services never performed. In particular, however, he was convicted for admitting five patients with severe dementia who weren’t eligible for his program…
