Psychiatrist arrested for death of patient

| | Jul 18, 2017, 08:02 PM IST
KOLKATA: A 67-year-old psychiatrist in Salt Lake was arrested and sent to jail for 14 days on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder of a middle aged automobile engineer who was undergoing treatment at his nursing home for a month and was found dead with multiple injuries on his body on May this year.

The doctor, RK Brahma, the director of the nursing home, had issued his death certificate claiming the engineer had died of "acute myocardial infection" on May 20. However, his relatives doubted the doctor's claims and lodged a complaint at Bidhannagar south police station. The body was sent for post-mortem examination and after the reports reached the cops that stated the patient died of "haematoma" and "blunt injuries" on his head, a team of officers arrested Brahma from his CK block home on Tuesday morning.

"At first the doctor claimed that the patient received the injuries after falling down from the bed, but when we asked him why he had written death due to cardiac arrest in the death certificate, he went mum," said an officer of Bidhannagar south police station.

The officer added that a preliminary investigation has revealed that mental patients are ill-treated and tortured at Uma Nalini Mary Clinic and Research Institute at KB block in Salt Lake. "It looks like the doctors had hit the patient's head against the wall that led to internal and external bleeding which killed him," said the officer.

very sad to hear about the ill treatment meted out to a senior psychiatrist in Kolkata. police should have conducted a thorough investigation before leveling baseless allegations like this. if the patient has indeed been beaten by someone in the nursing home, the ward boys and other staff should have been questioned. even the patients visitors can't be given a clean chit without a thorough investigation and scrutiny of cctv footage. if there is any negligence on the doctors part it may be that he ... He is not 67, he is 79 years old, and frail. People who know him tell that he couldn't have beaten anyone in his young age, leave alone beating a 41 years old patient to death at this age. The head trauma may be due to fall and they may have missed the signs of head injury. That should be investigated. But to press charge of beating a 41 year old patient to death by a 79 years old doctor is too much. absurd, imaginary and of course of malicious motives. Now anyone in Bengal can get framed and arrested, ... Read More

GANGTOK: Prodded by a Supreme Court direction, West Bengal police have started providing security to Sikkim registered trucks from Siliguri along NH-10, the sole road connecting the hill state with the rest of the country.

It is a major relief to truckers ferrying goods from Siliguri to Sikkim, as Sikkim registered vehicles have been ransacked and looted during protests in and around Siliguri since June end after the state government expressed support for the Gorkhaland movement in Darjeeling hills.

All Sikkim Truck Drivers Association (ASTDA) president Mingma Sherpa said that West Bengal police started giving escorts from Monday till Tuesday noon, around 130 goods laden trucks reached Sikkim from Siliguri.

The national highway, considered lifeline of the landlocked hill state, connects it to Siliguri and any blockade or interruption on it leads to severe scarcity of goods and stalls passengers' movement.

The Sikkim government had moved the Supreme Court on July 13 seeking a direction to the Centre and West Bengal government that NH-10, be protected and uninterrupted vehicular movement be ensured in the wake of ongoing agitation for separate Gorkhaland state.

A Supreme Court bench had on July 14 asked the authorities to ensure smooth movement of traffic and safety and security of passengers travelling in vehicles on NH-10.

The trucks laden with food items and vegetables were meant for all four districts of Sikkim, Sherpa said adding that normal movement of escorted trucks is expected to resume now along NH-10.

KOLKATA: Jadavpur police on Monday arrested three youths for allegedly attacking cricketer Mohammed Shami late on Saturday when the Team India member was returning home to Katju Nagar, close to South City Mall.

The cricketer had stopped his car in front of the apartment gate and was waiting for the caretaker to clear the way to the garage when three inebriated youths in a motorcycle accosted him for parking his car on the road. The trio also assaulted the caretaker who rushed to Shami's aid.

The three then left the spot only to return 15 minutes later. They forced their way into the building and allegedly barged into the cricketer's apartment, retreating only after Shami called the cops. The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed in the building. Police identified the youths as Jayanta Sarkar, Swarup Sarkar and Shiva Pramanik, who run a nearby salon.

"They have been booked under IPC sections 506 (criminal intimidation) and 341 (wrongful restraint)," said a senior officer of Jadavpur police station.

Ashutosh College among solar-compliant campuses

| Jul 18, 2017, 06.09 AM IST
KOLKATA: From next month, Ashutosh College's monthly electricity bill will reduce by a third as the college has it will generate 20KW of electricity on its own through a solar facility on its roof.

With its entry , Ashutosh is now the 12th college in Kolkata to set up a solar rooftop plant. In addition, there are around 50 schools in the city with rooftop solar facility. Inaugurating the facility at Ashutosh College, power minister Sovandeb Chattopadhyay said his department would continue to support solar initiatives in educational institutions and expected the movement to gain momentum through the the Aloshree programme, which was announced by the CM last year.

Progress in the project has been ham pered due to the delay in release of funds by the ministry of new and renewable energy .

The Aloshree project proposes to cover all state government offices, municipalities, corporations, panchayats, state-run public sector undertakings and other autonomous bodies of the state government. Altogether, 32 MW is to be added -10 MW each by WBPDCL, WBSEDCL and a school project (10 KW unit in 1,000 schools).

The West Bengal Green Development Corporation Ltd is also setting up 5KW units in 100 schools. Earlier, 10KW plants were set up in 100 schools.WBPDCL and WBREDA will also be funding the project in 200 other schools.

Among colleges that have set up solar plants include St Xavier's College, St Andrew's College, Derozio College, Sammilani College, Jogesh Chandra Chowdhuri College and Muralidhar Girls College.

This is a very good initiative, worthy of emulation by other colleges.Besides generating so much of green power, having these initiatives at educational institutions serves another purpose: they sensitise students to the importance of clean energy.
