CONCORD — A New Hampshire psychiatrist will pay a $10,000 fine, undertake extensive medical education courses and have his work monitored by an expert under terms of a disciplinary agreement reached with state medical officials earlier this month.

The agreement allows Dr. Jayakumar Patil to remain in practice. But he does so under reprimand by the New Hampshire Board of Medicine, which was issued two weeks ago and released to the media on Monday.

Many internet websites list Patil’s office in Bedford. Online licensing information said he attended medical school in India, worked an internship and residency in University Hospital in Jackson, Miss., and was licensed in New Hampshire in 1988 with a specialty in psychiatry.

His license was suspended for 30 days earlier this year.

The agreement calls for Patil to take courses on post traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorders, depressive disorders, substance abuse disorders, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders and sleep-wake disorders.

He has already completed a course on medical records and psychopharmacology.

He has 30 days to pay a $10,000 fine. And he must hire a monitor who will assess his clinical knowledge, decision making, patient care and other aspects of his practice. The monitor must report his findings, and Patil must submit those findings to the Board of Medicine.

Patil has acknowledged an investigation that found inadequate care for a patient he treated for nearly 12 years. Investigators found problems with his record keeping, consultations and procedures required before prescribing medication.
