Wayne State psychiatrist charged in online sex case

A Wayne State University psychiatry professor has been charged with soliciting sex with a minor over the Internet.
Matthew P. Galloway, 47, of Bloomfield Hills is accused of having three sexually explicit online chatroom conversations with someone he thought was a 15-year-old girl.
In fact, he was chatting with an undercover White Lake Township police officer, said Oakland County Prosecutor David Gorcyca.
The conversation occurred in the Yahoo! online chatroom Romance Michigan, police Lt. Ed Harris told The Oakland Press of Pontiac.
“He attempted to engage in sexual activity three times and described in detail the sexual acts he wanted to perform with what he thought was this 15-year-old,” Gorcyca said. “He was fully intent on carrying out his expressions. There is no gray area here. He made it quite clear what his purpose was.”
The latest conversation was Tuesday, he same day that police say Galloway planned a sexual encounter with his partner in conversation. They were to meet outside a Wal-Mart store in this Detroit suburb, about 30 miles northwest of Detroit.
Police arrested Galloway and confiscated his notebook computer, floppy disks and a bottle of Viagra, the Detroit Free Press said.
Galloway was arraigned Thursday in Novi District Court and released on a $100,000 personal bond until his preliminary examination July 6. He faces up to two years in prison if convicted.
“This is the devoted father of two and the grandfather of one,” defense lawyer Neil Rockind said during Thursday’s hearing. “He finds the acts with which he is charged to be repugnant and offensive and against everything he has worked his entire life for.”
