SECTION: METRO/REGION; Pg. B2

LENGTH: 163 words

A man from West Virginia was arrested over the weekend after he tried to walk through security at Logan Airport with a loaded gun packed in one of his carry-on bags, police said yesterday. Deleno H. Webb III, 65, a psychiatrist from Huntington, W. Va., was on his way to catch a Delta flight home Saturday afternoon when he put his backpack through an X-ray machine in Terminal A, police said. The machine’s operator saw the outline of the gun at around 2:50 p.m. and alerted State Police, who later identified the weapon as a .380-caliber Smith & Wesson, police and the US Transportation Security Agency said. The gun had one bullet in its chamber and seven more in its magazine, police said. Webb was charged with possessing an unlicensed handgun and carrying a weapon in a secured area of the airport. He was released on $500 bail and will be arraigned today in East Boston District Court. A message left at Webb’s home in West Virginia was not returned.
