A Long Island psychiatrist who bought a gun as part of a bizarre plot to kill six people and feed them to sharks avoided jail at his sentencing yesterday.
Richard Karpf was sentenced to time already served and released on five years probation.
Karpf will be required to undergo psychological counseling as part of a deal worked out in July, when he surrendered his medical license and pleaded guilty to a charge of gun possession.
If Karpf does not attend regular therapy sessions, he will be hit with a seven-year sentence.
Karpf, 52, of Great Neck, had asked a male patient to help him get a gun. He was later caught on tape saying he wanted to shoot six people at point-blank range and feed the chopped-up corpses to sharks.
The patient put his shrink in touch with an undercover cop, who sold Karpf a .22 pistol and a silencer in January 2003.
