A psychiatrist accused of having sex with two underage patients who subsequently committed suicide is scheduled to go on trial May 22, but prosecutors admit they have a near-impossible case.
Dr. Keith Haynes, 54, has been charged with four counts of sexual activity with a child, based on allegations made by patient Keith Pillow before he killed himself last year by overdosing on sleeping pills and pain killers.
At a March hearing, Circuit Judge Marvin Mounts said his “curbside opinion” was that the state would be unable to proceed. However, Assistant State Attorney Dale Buckner said prosecutors will try to prove their case by using statements Pillow made to other doctors.
The state began investigating Haynes in the 1980s, after Pillow and another patient, Mike Crowley, reported Haynes had sex with them before they turned 18.
