David K. Buckley, formerly a Fort Lauderdale psychiatrist, has been sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to drug charges.

Buckley, 39, of 2525 Barcelona Dr., was indicted last May by a federal grand jury in Maine for his involvement in a 1979 marijuana smuggling ring.

On June 29, Buckley pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to possess marijuana with the intent to distribute it. At his sentencing Friday, a federal judge ordered him examined by psychiatrists before beginning his prison term.

Buckley, who comes from a prosperous Fort Lauderdale banking family, said before his sentencing that he no longer practices psychiatry in Fort Lauderdale. Most recently, Buckley said, he has been trying to develop a small business manufacturing electronics.
