Psychiatrist Charged With Sending Racists Faxes
Dateline: Pittsburgh
February 19, 1992

A psychiatrist was accused of faxing 100 racist messages to people, including former Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Lynn Swann.

E. Stuart Hendrickson, 51, of Murrysville, pleaded innocent Monday to 13 counts of ethnic intimidation and harassment by communication. He remained jailed Tuesday in lieu of $ 15,000 bond.

Detectives said Hendrickson, who is white, admitted sending the messages, but said he was only joking.

“When I found out this guy is a psychiatrist, I wondered what his patients had been told,” said Swann, who got the faxes at his downtown office. “Was he implanting his thinking, his beliefs?”

“It’s not like getting an obscene phone call and you can hang up,” said Leonard Perfido, an architect who received several messages. “Most came during the night, so when you arrive in the morning they’re there.”
