Medical Society Founder, Alienist* Convicted in Drug Charge
November 18, 1934
Los Angeles, (UPI)

Psychiatrist Edward H. Williams
A jury in federal court convicted the noted alienist on one of the counts contained in an indictment growing out of asserted prescriptions for drugs.
Dr. F.T. Cary of Inglewood, jointly named with Dr. Williams in the indictment, was convicted on five out of six counts.
Dr. Williams, besides being a founder of the medical association, was an advisor to the league of nations on international drug traffic policies. As an alienist he testified for the defense in the William Edward Hickman, Winnie Ruth Judd and Massie murder trials.
The psychiatrist had always maintained that extreme cases of drug addictions should be classed as a disease. He met frequent criticism for his liberal prescriptions in the treatment of such cases.
After defense counsel had filed motions for new trial and arrest of judgment, Federal Judge Harry A. Holizer set December 3 as the date for argument on the motions and formal sentencing.
Convictions carries a maximum penalty of five years and $2000 fine on each count.
