A consultant psychiatrist has been sentenced to seven years in prison for raping a woman patient and indecently assaulting two others.

Dr Michael Haslam, 69, was found guilty of raping the woman in a hospital photocopying room while he was working for the NHS in North Yorkshire in 1988.

A jury at Leeds Crown Court also found Haslam, of Crayke, near Easingwold, North Yorkshire, guilty of four charges of indecent assault involving three patients.

The attacks took place between 1981 and 1988.

Haslam worked at Clifton Hospital, York, until he left the NHS in 1989.

He then went into private practice, before retiring in 1998.

The Judge, Mr Justice Gray, sentenced Haslam to seven years in jail for the rape and three years for the indecent assault in 1988.

He also received 18 month sentences for each of three indecent assaults which took place in 1981.

Disgraced’ doctor

The judge said: “The distress caused to these patients has been profound.

“Subsequently, that is compounded by the fact that by contesting these charges you have subjected them to the ordeal of giving evidence.

“I accept that some allowance ought to be made because all these offences took place some time ago. But the lapse in time does not make any difference to the gravity of these offences.

“These convictions have resulted in your disgrace both professionally and personally.”

Mr Gray ordered Haslam to be placed on the sex offenders’ register at an earlier hearing.
