FORMER MCLEAN HOSPITAL PSYCHIATRIST SENTENCED IN FEDERAL COURT ON TAX EVASION CHARGE

A former Weston psychiatrist and staff member at McLean Hospital in Belmont was sentenced Friday in federal court on charges of tax evasion for the tax year 1986.

Acting U.S. Attorney A. John Pappalardo announced today that Peter M. Panzarino, M.D., 45, formerly of 70 Fairview Rd., Weston, Mass., and now a resident of San Diego, was sentenced Friday by U.S. District Judge Douglas Woodlock to three years probation and community service, following his plea, earlier this year, to income tax evasion. At his change of plea, Pansarino had admitted that he submitted a false return for the tax year 1986, understating his taxable income by over $57,000. Panzarino admitted that he misrepresented his taxable income by failing to report four-fifths of his income from his private psychiatry practice. The income he received as a staff psychiatrist for a New Hampshire hospital was accurately reported through the hospital’s filing of a W-2 wage statement. A count charging that Panzarino also understated his income in 1985 by over $29,000, when he was on the staff of McLean Hospital in Belmont, was dropped as part of a plea agreement with the government.

In sentencing Panzarino to probation with community service, Judge Woodlock emphasized the lengthy term of probation that he was imposing, and stressed that he was not imposing a jail term, because he felt that the larger community would be better served by Panzarino’s continued psychiatric service to the underprivileged. Panzarino currently counsels homeless and AIDS patients in San Diego, and he was ordered by Judge Woodlock to continue that or equivalent service for a minimum of 12 hours per week for the duration of his three-year probation term.
