HARTFORD — A couple will pay a $400,000 settlement following a lawsuit from the state’s attorney general in which it was alleged they submitted false claims to the state’s Medicaid program.

According to the attorney general’s office, Dr. Ashwini Sabnis and her husband Saurav Mohanty submitted claims for services that were not provided or “upcoded” the claims, which means they used a higher-paying code on the claim.

“The submission of false claims to federal and state health care programs is illegal,” said Attorney General George Jepsen in a statement. “My office will continue to actively pursue and hold accountable those who attempt to take advantage of Medicaid and other taxpayer-funded health care programs.”

Jepsen’s office said that the false claims were submitted from January 2010 to July 2012.
