Psychiatrist admits intimacy, resigns
Case generated by patient’s complaint of inappropriate conduct by doctor

A former Victoria psychiatrist has resigned from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C. after admitting to having an intimate relationship with a patient.

The college, which serves as the licensing and regulatory body for all physicians and surgeons in the province, has issued a news release saying that Dr. John N. MacTavish acknowledged his inappropriate conduct, which took place \”in or around\” 2005.

The case was generated by a patient complaint, said college spokeswoman Susan Prins.

\”The physician came forward,\” she said. \”He submitted his resignation upon hearing of the allegations.\”

MacTavish, who is now 72, resigned from the college as of last June 30. He had become a member of the B.C. medical register in 1980.

Despite his resignation, the college continued to investigate so the case would come to a formal resolution, Prins said.

\”What we were looking for was admission of infamous conduct, which we received. During this time, of course, the physician wasn\’t practising and hasn\’t practised since the date of his resignation.\”

MacTavish has also agreed not to reapply for registration to the college or to any similar regulatory organization.

\”I think in this case we\’re quite satisfied that Dr. MacTavish will never seek licensure again,\” Prins said.
