A 70-year-old Kearney, Nebraska, psychiatrist was sentenced Thursday in federal court to five years of probation for failing to pay more than $131,000 in federal payroll taxes.
U.S. Attorney Deborah Gilg’s office said that Dr. Reynaldo De Los Angeles also was ordered to provide free psychiatric care to residents of Buffalo County one day a month for five years.
De Los Angeles is required to pay $131,775 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service, provide his probation officer with access to his financial records to assess his ability to pay restitution and to monitor his lifestyle, and complete a cognitive behavioral-based program.
U.S. District Judge Richard Kopf sentenced De Los Angeles in Lincoln. Kopf cited De Los Angeles’ age as a partial reason for sentencing him to probation.
De Los Angeles was indicted in December 2014 and charged with nine counts of failure to turn over Social Security, Medicare and federal income taxes withheld from employees of his Kearney and Grand Island mental health clinics between 2008 and 2012. The indictment alleged that De Los Angeles withheld $131,775 from the employees’ paychecks but failed to pay the payroll taxes to the Internal Revenue Service as required.
De Los Angeles pleaded guilty Oct. 22.
