License Revoked

LENGTH: 276 words

DATELINE: SANTA ANA

The Newport Beach psychiatrist who lived with a pedophile and allegedly allowed him to tag along on visits to group youth
homes has lost his license.
Burnell Forgey, 80, surrendered the license rather than fight charges by the Medical Board of California accusing him of gross negligence for allegedly
allowing James Lee Crummel to visit group homes with Forgey on professional
visits to troubled youth.

The board alleged that Forgey endangered youths at the homes he visited when he allowed Crummel to tag along. Crummel had access to the boys’
files, was left alone with them and gave them gifts and rides, the board
found.
The Los Angeles Times reported that the board determined that on at least two occasions, Crummel entered the private rooms of boys and talked
to them.
Crummel, a convicted sex offender for violent crimes against children in four states dating to the 1960s, is now jailed on charges that he murdered 13-
year-old James Trotter of Costa Mesa in 1979.
Crummel was convicted of murdering a 9-year-old boy, but a judge later ruled that he received ineffective counsel, which allowed him to plead guilty
to kidnapping.
Forgey’s relationship to Crummel came to light when Newport Beach police notified neighbors of the pair of Crummel’s status as a high-risk sex
offender.
Since that time, Forgey has left the Newport Crest condominium complex owned by Forgey’s son and is living in an assisted living retirement home
in Irvine, the Golden Creek Inn, the Orange County Register reported.
The Orange County District Attorney’s Office continues its investigation.
