STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (WJAC) — A State College psychiatrist is jailed and facing a sexual assault charge after a patient tells police the doctor got physical with him during a recent therapy session.

53-year-old Ashok Bharucha of Lewisburg is accused of assaulting a man during an appointment earlier this month at the doctor’s State College office.

According to the criminal complaint form, the man was there for what he terms “a routine psychiatrist appointment” with Dr. Bharucha.

He said the doctor initially kissed on him on the cheek, and hugged him, which the patient thought was part of Bharucha’s native culture.

But within a half hour, the patient told police, the touching escalated with Dr. Bharucha saying he loved him and eventually attempted to have sex with the patient.

The patient also said Dr. Bharucha invited him to the doctor’s hotel room but told him he needed to be naked.

The man said he became Dr. Bharucha’s patient this past January, but this was one of their first in person meetings because earlier sessions were done in facetime due to the pandemic.

Police used a search warrant to seize the doctor’s phone for text messages he reportedly sent to the man.

The patient also obtained a separate restraining order against the doctor.

Dr. Bharucha was jailed in the Centre County Prison with no bail set and a hearing set for next week.
