Completing his plunge from prominent psychiatrist to jailed felon, Dr. James Taylor was sentenced Thursday to six to 12 years in state prison for bludgeoning a female psychiatrist with a clawed crowbar last autumn.

Monroe County Judge Jerome Cheslock sentenced Taylor to an additional six months to a year in prison for intimidating witnesses in a separate tax-fraud case, bringing his total jail term to 6-1/2-13 years.

The sentence followed tearful testimony by the husband and two daughters of Dr. Martha Turnberg and a comparatively stoic request by Taylor that Turnberg’s family forgive him for the attack Oct. 21 that left her with nearly 200 stitches on her head and face…

Sporting his usual crew cut and trifocals, the diminutive Taylor kept his head bowed as the sentence was announced. His wife, Melissa, remained standing four rows back in a show of solidarity…

Taylor is former director of the psychiatric ward at Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg, and an attending physician at Miners Memorial Hospital, Coaldale, and Gnaden Huetten Hospital, Lehighton…
