A Paramus psychiatrist has been accused of coercing a patient to commit a sex act during therapy sessions at his former office in Fair Lawn in 2001.

Dr. Joseph Traverso, 56, was arrested Tuesday night at his new Paramus office and charged with sexual assault, according to a news release from the Bergen County Prosecutor\’s Office.

Traverso, who lives in West Orange, is accused of coercing a 42-year-old Franklin Lakes woman to undress and perform a sex act while he watched, Assistant Prosecutor Patricia Baglivi said.

Michael Critchley, Traverso\’s attorney, said, \”He categorically denies any charge of wrongdoing filed by a patient who is unfortunately suffering from mental illness.\”

The psychiatrist was released on $25,000 bail and ordered to have no contact with the woman, the Prosecutor\’s Office said. Traverso posted bail and was released, it said.
