BRUNSWICK, Maine — A Brunswick psychiatrist has been disciplined by the Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine after an independent expert found her recordkeeping and prescribing practices did not meet the accepted standard of care.
Dr. Whitney Houghton was placed on one year’s probation starting Wednesday, during which time she must transition to and maintain typewritten records that meet psychiatric standards, successfully complete a recordkeeping and charting course and provide records for the board to review, according to a release.
In October 2015, Houghton completed a three-day psychopharmacology course at Massachusetts General Psychiatry Academy as part of the action.
According to the release, the board received a complaint on April 1, 2014, from the husband of a patient who alleged Houghton continued to prescribe medications despite his wife’s long history of addiction.
An independent outside expert found the records did not meet the standard of care and noted concerns with specific medications prescribed, the release said.
Houghton entered into a consent agreement with the board Wednesday.
