Attending Physician Arrested Over Patient’s Death at Yang Jae-woong’s Hospital
Doctor charged with professional negligence; 11 suspects including hospital director investigated

[OSEN=Choi Lee-jung Reporter] Dr. Yang Jae-woong (43), a psychiatrist and broadcaster, has seen the attending physician A at his hospital finally arrested in connection with a patient’s death.

Yonhap News reported on the 20th that the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency arrested Dr. A on charges including professional negligence resulting in death. Presiding Judge Yang Woo-chang of the Bucheon Branch of the Incheon District Court issued a bench warrant, citing “concerns over evidence destruction.”

Dr. A is accused of failing to implement proper safety measures for a woman in her 30s, identified as B, who was hospitalized and died on May 27 of last year. B had been admitted for treatment of diet pill addiction and passed away 17 days after admission, reportedly restrained at the time, which intensified public shock.

Earlier, police had requested bench warrants for three medical staff, including Dr. A, but prosecutors rejected the request. After the Seoul High Prosecutors’ Office Warrant Review Committee ruled that Dr. A’s arrest was justified, the warrant was reissued.

To date, 11 suspects, including hospital director Yang Jae-woong, have been charged by police. Investigations are focusing on management responsibilities and potential negligence by medical staff.

Meanwhile, Yang recently attended a National Assembly audit and answered related questions. Controversy over clarifying the truth and assigning responsibility is expected to continue.

Separately, Hanie, a singer and actress who publicly acknowledged her relationship with Yang, confirmed her romance with Yang, who is 10 years older, in October 2022. They planned to marry last year but postponed it indefinitely following the patient’s death at Yang’s hospital.
