A 33-year-old psychiatrist was arrested yesterday in connection with the apparent strangulation of a man found nude in the psychiatrist’s apartment in Manhattan, the police said.

The police said they expected the psychiatrist, Dr. Lowell Finkelstein, to be charged with second-degree murder.

Officers went to Dr. Finkelstein’s apartment at 469 West 57th Street off Tenth Avenue at 8:42 A.M. yesterday after neighbors reported hearing the sounds of a struggle, the police said.

A police spokesman said Dr. Finkelstein answered the door in the nude when officers arrived. Upon entering, they found a man lying face up on the living-room floor. He was also nude and had a television cable wire around his neck, the police said.

The police spokesman, Sgt. Ronald Severin, said the victim, whose identity was being withheld until relatives were notified, was 22 years old, and had a Manhattan address. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Dr. Finkelstein had lived in the building for about six years, neighbors said. Police described his one-bedroom apartment as tidy and well-furnished.
